Results from a child study are reported in the January 29, 2020 issue of Nature. Researchers in the Krajmalnik-Brown Lab found that children with autism spectrum disorder had lower gut microbe diversity, especially lower numbers of Bifidobacteria and Prevotella. After an 18-week study during which participants received a bacteria-fortified drink, the children’s gastrointestinal symptoms of chronic diarrhea, pain and constipation reduced by 80% and their gut bacterial diversity increased.
